Goodreads: At Camp Mirror Lake, terror is the name of the game... but can you survive the night?
Charity Curtis has the summer job of her dreams, playing the “final girl” at Camp Mirror Lake. Guests pay to be scared in this full-contact terror game, as Charity and her summer crew recreate scenes from a classic slasher film, Curse of Camp Mirror Lake. The more realistic the fear, the better for business.
But the last weekend of the season, Charity's co-workers begin disappearing. And when one ends up dead, Charity's role as the final girl suddenly becomes all too real. If Charity and her girlfriend Bezi hope to survive the night, they'll need figure out what this killer is after. Is there is more to the story of Mirror Lake and its dangerous past than Charity ever suspected?
As soon as I heard about this book I knew I had to read it. I am a big fan of horror films and love the classic plot of a summer camp that turns into the place of nightmares. This book follows Charity who plays a 'final girl' at the fully immersive, full contact terror game located at Camp Mirror Lake which was the setting of a classic slasher film. People then pay to spend a night being terrified on the grounds while trying to survive the experience.
The plot sounded fantastic and I couldn't wait to get stuck in. It starts off fast paced and builds an atmosphere with a few nights of terror at the expense of the guests to help get the reader feeling scared and anxious and there are of course a few jump scares to really set the tone.
Charity soon begins to notice people from her crew going missing or as she first thinks, ditching the work to go home. However, it soon becomes all too real that there is something seriously wrong with the camp when the staff realise that they aren't alone and that they are being picked off one by one.
Here begins the real frightening stuff as Charity and her friends need to find a way to survive the night! There is gore, terror and everything you could possibly want all packed into this fairly short and quick read.
For me, the ending of the book was a little disappointing when you find out who the murderer is and I would have much preferred the classic murderous rampage than what it actually is but overall this is a fun and thrilling read from start to finish that may keep you up at night!
Kalynn Bayron is also the author of Cinderella is Dead, This Poison Heart and This Wicked Fate which are all fairy tale retellings which you should also definitely take a look at.
Can you recommend me any other good horror stories?

Great review. Horror isn't my go to genre but I'm intrigued by the fairy tale retellings ☺️
ReplyDeleteThe fairy tale retellings are definitely worth a read if you like them! I loved them.
DeleteFab review Gemma its a shame the ending was a bit disappointing. You might like The Island by CL Taylor which is about a group of older teens stranded on an island. More psychological thriller than horror but I enjoyed it 😁 Janet x
ReplyDeleteOoh The Island sounds good, I will check it out x
DeleteExcellent review, Gemma! I love the book cover on this one. Very interested to check out those fairytale retellings too. I look forward to reading more of your reviews here.
